December 10-14

The holiday is fast approaching! Since this was our last full week, we had lots to do.
The most exciting thing was the addition of Aruna to our class! She did her trial lesson on Monday and start in class on Thursday and will be with us from now on. Aruna is from Kazakhstan. She is the daughter of the new Primary ICT teacher. This is her first time in Japan and is still learning Japanese and English. The kids are excited to play with her and show her all the cool things we do in class.

We also had a lot of fun celebrating Yuto's birthday on Thursday!

Here is what we did this week:

Literacy
This week our sight words were an, giving, live, and stop. We also focused on our AI sound words like rAIn, pAIn, and wAIt. The kids have been doing really well on button and sight words. Good job everyone!
As a reminder- next raz kids deadline is Thursday, December 20th. Make sure your student finishes level C and is on level D by that date.

Math
This week we took a step back to make sure we were comfortable with bigger and smaller numbers, as will as numbers before and after. We did some practice with cards as well as writing practice. Good work everyone!

Unit of Inquiry
We are winding down our unit on wants and needs and started our summative assessment this week. Students will be working in their table groups to make a city. They will then present their cities and tell everyone the things they want/need. I can’t wait to see what everyone creates!

Winter Party
As you are aware, our class winter party will be Thursday, December 20th. This is a class only event, parents are not part this year.
The pre-k classes will be having a combined party, where we will make pancake snowman and decorate them with fruit. If you child has any food allergies/sensitivities to: eggs, flour, banana, kiwi, or strawberries, please let us know as soon as possible.

Music and PE
As you may have heard, this week was our last week of PE with Uehara-sensei. And Tuesday will be our last music class with Katsura-sensei. The school is working towards becoming more IB in all subjects, so we are working on adapting those classes to fit our schools curriculum. We are sad to see these teachers go!

December 3-7

We’re in the final push of this term! Only one more full week after this. The kids are still working hard and learning new things everyday. This week math and Inquiry time have had a lot going on!

Here is what we did this week:

Literacy
This week our sight words were again, give, let, and some. We also worked on our OA sounds words like bOAt, cOAt, sOAp, and tOAst. Next week we will add new sight words and work on our AI sounds.

Math
We are continuing to work on addition with visual aids and fingers. This week we also worked a bit on number bonds to 10. This is a bit of tricky concept, but I want to at least introduce the idea. Next week we’ll continue focusing on addition, as well as identifying bigger and smaller numbers.

Unit of Inquiry
This week we did more practice on wants and needs. This week we worked on things our house/family wants and needs. We did a great project where kids had to build their houses with needs, and then decide what they want.
Next week we’ll start wrapping up this unit and working on community wants and needs.
