January 28 - February 1

I hope everyone had a great grandparents day. It was wonderful to see all the parents and grandparents together with the students. I was gone briefly on Tuesday, but the rest of the week has been full of playing, learning, and fun.
Here is what we did this week: Literacy This week our sight words could, his, open, and think. Our phonics focus was the URE sound like in sURE, cURE, and pURE. This is one of the trickier sounds we’ve done. But it’s our last focused sound for phase 3 phonics. We’ll do a general review for the next 1-2 week, and then get a head start on phase 4. Our next Raz-Kids deadline is will be February 20th. Please reach level E by that date
Math We’re still working on doubles addition and large number addition. I a few students also showed interest in reverse addition (how can we make 10? 5+5, 3+7, 4+6, ect) so we spent some time exploring that this week. I think most students are comfortable with at least the concept of addition. So I’d like to start subtraction next week.
Unit of Inquiry We are continuing our Inquiry into reflection. We didn’t do reflection journals this week due to grandparents day and me being sick. I’d like to alter them a bit and start them up again next week. We’ve spent some time working on our YEP dances this week as well. We also started working on the perspective line of inquiry, and are taking inspiration from different artist. On thursday we looked at Yayoi Kusama and her many polka-dots. We made our own polka-dot art which I will hang on the wall as soon as possible.

Announcements I will be out of town on Monday. I’ll be back in the class on Tuesday! Tuesday is picture day, so make sure uniforms are clean on that day. Music class is now on Mondays, so please be sure to bring pianicas Monday morning. The next Raz-Kids deadline is February 20th. Please reach level E by that time. The park is getting a bit cold, so please send your students with a jacket on our park days. Sharing Time Please refer to the sharing time blog post or the sidebar for the sharing time schedule. Next week’s sharing times are Tuesday: Hisaya Thursday: Mitsuki Please bring in a piece of art to share with the class Upcoming Events February 5th: Picture day February 11th: Holiday. January 21-25 2019

It has been a long and busy week in pre-k! We had our IB certification visit on Monday and tuesday. Mr. Justin has also been out on vacation since Wednesday, so Ms. Chico has been cover his class. Lastly, we also had our (late) birthday party for Karyne on Thursday! With so much going on, here’s what we did this week:

Literacy
This week our sight words were aby, him once, and then. Our phonics focus was the AIR sound like in AIRport hAIR, and pAIR. We are also continuing our reading comprehension
Our next Raz-Kids deadline is will be February 20th. Please reach level E by that date

Math
This week in math we focused on doubles addition (2+2, 5+5, ect). I’d like to start having the kids know these by heart so they can be used later when they learn multiplication. I’m also challenging some kids to do think about addition in reverse. What kind of addition can we do go make 8? (4+4, 3+5, 7+1, ect). We’ve got a few new math centers and games with doubles and addition focus.

Unit of Inquiry
We are continuing our Inquiry into reflection. We are continuing our reflection journals. Everyday, the students should write one thing they did a good job on, one thing they want to learn/practice tomorrow, and their favorite part of the day. I’m trying to get the students to really think about what they’ve learned today. It would really help them at home if you ask what they did today. Ask for specifics too! What did you do during ABC time today? What sounds did you practice? Did you do reading or writing practice? Practicing remembering at home will also help the kids practice their remembering and reflection at school.

Along with reflection, we are also starting on our YEP performance. To tie it in with our Inquiry, I’m having the kids reflect and choose what songs and dances they want. We’ll have our final set list decided by Monday. YEP is usually a surprise, but my hint is that it will be Disney-themed again!

January 15-18 2019

I hope everyone had a great 3 day weekend! I hope everyone used to rest and feel healthy. Especially with the flu going around the school. This week was a short one in school, but still lots to do. We’ve got a lot going on for Literacy and Unit of Inquiry.

Here is what we did this week:

Literacy
This week our sight words were ask, her, old, and them. Our phonics focus was the EAR sound like in EAR, hEAR, bEARd, and nEAR. We are also starting to practice reading comprehension once a week. The first 2 tries should be on seesaw. We’re focusing on reading 4 sentences, and then answering a few questions.
Our next Raz-Kids deadline is will be February 20th. Please reach level E by that date

Math
This week we started advancing a bit more and worked on addition 1-20. I had kids use manipulatives if they needed, but hopefully we can have kids start working on their mental math as well. Next week I want to start focusing on doubles addition (2+2, 3+3, 4+4, ect) and hopefully have the kids learn them by heart.

Unit of Inquiry
We are continuing our Inquiry into reflection. This week we started reflection journals. At the end of every day, the kids write or draw 1 thing they did a good job on, one thing they want to practice tomorrow, and their favorite part of the day. This week we also did a winter tree art project. The kids also got to make reflection stars for their own art, and perspective stars for others. Next week we’ll do some more reflection practice, as well as start deciding what we want to do for YEP.

Next week we are also getting our official visit for becoming IB certified. The teachers are all very excited to show how hard the kids are working. We’ll keep you updated!

January 7-11 2019

Welcome back everyone! It’s great to be back at school. I hope everyone had a fun and restful holiday.
As we enter term 3, we are focusing in on our last unit of inquiry, putting together our YEP performance, and making sure we are ready to move onto kinder. The kids had a great time this week getting back into the groove of learning and playing together.

Here is what we did this week:

Literacy
This week our sight words were as, has, of, and thank. Our phonics sound of the week was IGH. We practiced reading words like nIGHt, fIGHt, and hIGH.

Math

Unit of Inquiry
Term 3’s unit is How we Express Ourselves. The central idea is people can use reflection and perspective to grow in art. We will be working on what reflection means, through the medium of art. Why do we like our art? How can we change it? How can we grow?
This week we worked on understand what reflection means. We have 5 “hats” of reflection: thinking, feeling, problems, ideas, and good jobs. We used these ideas to reflect on the work in our drawers and choose our best work.
